Racist Roots of Tax Policy
Tax policy isn’t race-neutral. In fact, the history of its development shows us how it has been used explicitly as a tool for discriminating against people of color. Tax policy has been a powerful tool for shaping our country’s political, social, and economic landscape and has contributed to the further consolidation of wealth and power into the hands of a small, predominantly white, group of people in the United States.
But tax policy can also be wielded to undo those harms, right past wrongs, and build a more equitable future. It can be a tool for creating a true and healthy democracy.
