State of Change

In 2019, the staff of CFI were hard at work on an exciting new project we were hoping to release during the summer of 2020. We spent the better part of that year asking a simple yet wide-ranging question: What can the last 50 years of tax, fiscal, and economic data tell us about how we got to where we are today? At the time, the state economy was widely seen as strong, but was there more to the story? In what ways did our state, our people, and our economy change over the decades?
All of that came to a crashing halt just a few months later when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Just like everyone else, our lives changed drastically and we were forced to adapt quickly. Our work immediately pivoted to finding ways to help support those who were directly serving the people most affected by the pandemic, and supporting efforts to stabilize the economy and help get families and workers who were laid off and lost income back on their feet.
Now, nearly a year removed from the beginning of the most dramatic change our communities have ever experienced, we wanted to return to that data.
